The Liberator | Rick in a tin x Renegade Wines

Meet Richard Kelley, aka Rick, Aka The Liberator. Richard, Master of Wine, is one of the most respected authorities on South African wine in the UK and beyond - and Rick, The Liberator, has taken it upon himself to seek out, uncover – and liberate – the hidden vinous treasures of South Africa. As a lover of quality without the often accompanying dose of snobbery, he is not bound by die confinements of tradition and intrigued by the unconventional. All of this led to a piqued interest at the start of the canned wine revolution, and as such, Rick, the Cape Crusader, would be the first to embrace innovation and help pioneer new formats - queue  Rick in a Tin. In his own words, “The beauty of canned wine is in its simplicity, as there is no need to search in vain for a corkscrew or even grab some glasses, wine in a tin can be enjoyed anywhere and at any time. The smaller size of this format has clear benefits and allows for the wine to be chilled much quicker and keeps it fresh.”

So, as an early adopter of this idea and seeing all the benefits, it was a no-brainer to release a canned range. More specifically, The Liberator wanted to sell premium South African wine in a can in the UK, but not just from a single producer. The idea was to achieve economies of scale by pulling small batches from many independent producers under one roof. It proved to be challenging to find a fourth party (between producer, client and canner) who could facilitate the entire process.

The Liberator’s bottled wine labels were already handled by Haumann Smal, a design company in Stellenbosch. They introduced the team at Renegade wines to Rick. At that stage, Renegade Wines had just launched their very first canned certified wine range, called CanCan, whose labels were also designed by Haumann Smal. After extensive tastings, a Swartland Chenin was selected to be canned under the label of Chenin No5, subtly gesturing to the French theme of the CanCan cabaret dancers. According to the client, “Chenin No.5 represents a first step. An experiment in acceptance.”

Subsequently, Rick in a Tin has released 9 more cans, 10 in total, with some new additions planned for this year. Liberator fans can enjoy the same diverse selection of wines, produced mostly in small, finite quantities, as they would expect to find in conventional Liberator bottles. It simply allows more drinkers an opportunity to experiment, with wines presented in an alternative and convenient single-serve format.

Renegade Wines provided a one-stop solution - From helping with the selection of wines from various producers to facilitating the canning process. Since Jaap and Francois both have a background in the wine industry (Francois being a winemaker himself) and business acumen, team Renegade is well-equipped to help individuals, companies, or brands establish their own quality canned wine range.
